NCCIA arrest three suspects for illegally selling telecom users’ confidential data

Islamabad: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), has arrested three suspects in Lahore for allegedly selling confidential telecom users' data through illegal channels.

The action was carried out following a complaint lodged by the PTA. During the raid, authorities recovered five mobile phones, eight biometric verification devices and 43 suspected SIM cards from the possession of the accused.

According to the PTA, forensic analysis of the seized mobile phones revealed evidence that confidential telecom data was being illegally bought and sold through WhatsApp.

The authority said the suspects were involved in the unlawful sale of call detail records (CDRs), International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, subscriber information and users' location data.

The recovered record also contained citizens' fingerprints, Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) details and evidence of financial transactions, the PTA added.

A criminal case has been registered against the accused, while investigations are underway to identify and arrest other members of the network involved in the illegal operation.

The PTA reiterated that protecting the personal and confidential data of telecom users remains one of its top priorities, adding that indiscriminate action would continue against individuals involved in the illegal trade of sensitive customer information.

The authority further said that the PTA and NCCIA are committed to strengthening mutual cooperation to combat cybercrime and prevent data breaches, while advanced forensic analysis is being used to gather additional evidence.

The PTA also announced that joint operations with law enforcement agencies would continue to ensure the protection of the personal telecom data of citizens.
