Islamabad: Opposition members in the Senate strongly criticised the government over what they described as inadequate medical facilities being provided to former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail.
Speaking in the Upper House on the issue of Imran Khan's health and the medical report submitted by doctors before the Supreme Court, Opposition Leader Senator Raja Nasir Abbas said Imran Khan was a national leader and condemned the treatment being meted out to him.
He demanded that Imran Khan's personal doctors be given access to him and that his family members, lawyers and party officials be allowed to meet him in jail.
Raja Nasir Abbas said the health of Imran Khan was currently the most important issue and called for a discussion on his medical condition in the Senate. He said a Senate sub-committee should be constituted to visit Imran Khan and assess his health condition.
The opposition leader said Imran Khan had allegedly been kept in jail without adequate opportunities for meetings and that his cases were not being heard. Referring to reports about Imran Khan's blood pressure, he questioned the reported health concerns and demanded that the government allow his doctors to examine him.
He also called for Imran Khan to be shifted to a hospital if required. Raja Nasir Abbas said public confidence in the government and the system had declined and urged the authorities to allow people, doctors and political representatives to meet Imran Khan.
He said Pakistan had to be run collectively and stressed the need to resolve political issues through democratic and parliamentary means.
