Karachi’s resources should be spent on Karachi, says Saifuddin Advocate

Karachi: Acting Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, Saifuddin Advocate, along with District Gulberg Central Ameer Kamran Siraj and Town Chairman Nusratullah, inaugurated the Umar Family Park and Open-Air Gym in Block 18, UC-2.Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Saifuddin Advocate said that the annual budget of the Sindh government is approximately Rs3.5 trillion, of which 95 percent is collected from Karachi, yet the citizens of Karachi are deprived of basic facilities. More than half of the city lacks access to water, infrastructure is in ruins, roads are broken, and there is no proper transport system. Garbage heaps and overflowing sewers can be seen across the city, causing severe mental and physical distress to residents. He demanded that Karachi's resources should be spent on Karachi and that powers and resources should be transferred to the grassroots level under Article 140-A of the Constitution. He also called for development funds to be allocated to towns and union councils.Saifuddin Advocate fu rther said that the current year's budget of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is Rs55 billion, while in previous years it stood at Rs39 billion, Rs40 billion, Rs49 billion, and Rs25 billion. During these five years, Murtaza Wahab remained imposed on Karachi - first as administrator and now by depriving Jamaat-e-Islami of the mayoralty while occupying all resources. He questioned where thousands of billions of rupees in budgets had been spent, saying that Karachi's condition has worsened and citizens have no relief. He claimed that if Jamaat-e-Islami had its mayor, Karachi's resources would have been spent on the city in the same way as during the tenures of former mayors Abdul Sattar Afghani and Niamatullah Khan.He added that Niamatullah Khan completed the K-3 water project and initiated K-4, but subsequent governments, including the PPP and Muttahida Qaumi Movement, failed to complete the K-4 project.Saifuddin Advocate accused the PPP of incompetence, mismanagement, and corruption, saying its development projects continue to inflate in cost. He cited the example of a flyover project in Ghotki that started at Rs4 billion and escalated to Rs78 billion before collapsing during construction. He also said that the Karimabad underpass and the Red Line project had exceeded their original budgets by several times.
